Bucks will usually stick around with their fawns for a year whilst female White Tailed Deer stay with their fawns for 2 years.
Melanistic or melanic White Tails are extremely rare deer that have a mutation in their genes where their body produces too much skin and hair melanin, this explains the pigment of their fur.
Fawns are born with white spots that go away within a year. The dots help the fawn camouflage into their surroundings and hide from predators. To help hide them even more, fawns have no scent, so they are much harder to sniff out or be sensed.
A deer's powerful legs allow them to jump up to 9 feet tall. Their legs also give them the ability to run at speeds of up to 40 Miles per hour. Often swimming to cross bodies of water, WTD are powerful swimmers. A deer can swim up to 13 miles per hour.
A deer can detect scents and odors many hundred yards away. They regularly lick their noses to help keep it moist. The moist nose allows scent partials to stick to it, helping the deer to smell better.
Antlers are not used by bucks to fight against predators but they are actually used to spar with other bucks during the mating season. For more info about the White Tailed Deer's antlers, check our Life Processes Continued.
